England Lose in the Semi Finals

Whether you call it football or soccer, the passion for the sport is a universal feeling, it’s something that is at the heart of many of our great nations. Don’t be sad it’s not coming home, be happy that England made it to the semi finals of the World Cup. It was one hell of a journey for Southgate’s men and we take a look back at their journey of a lifetime.

Group Stages –

Tunisia Vs England      Score – 1 – 2

Harry Kane was on from to help England to their first win of the competition. The first game was always going to be a difficult one for England and in typical football fashion they gave away a penalty. People around the UK thought that England were going to get off to a mediocre start. But, they forgot about Harry Kane who latched on to a Tripper corner and brought 3 points all the way home from Russia.

England Vs Panama   score – 6 – 1

From another set piece England made sure they got the early goal and John Stones celebrated like a madness. In the 20th minute Jesse Lingard was fouled in the box and was awarded a penalty. Harry Kane stepped up with an excellent penalty to make it 2-0.

England fans at this point didn’t think it was coming home, sure, you can say that England should be beating a team like Panama. But, saying it and doing it are two different things. They unified as a team and played well against a scrappy outfit. That man Jesse Lingard scored a screamer from 20 yards to make it 3-0 to the 3 Lions. John Stones swung his head again to score a brace for his country and make it 4-0 to England. Guess what comes next guys it’s another penalty. Kane does the nation proud and makes it 5-0.

A lucky deflection makes it 6-0 to England and Harry Kane grabs a hattrick in a World Cup finals, if you ask me that’s a hell of an achievement. Panama make a moment of history for themselves as they score their first ever World Cup goal and make it the final score of 6-1.

England Vs Belgium        score – 0 – 1

The first World Cup game between these two nations since 1990. However, nobody really wanted to top the group did they, with the possibility of a Brazil game looming over the group winners. Changes were made from both teams, it was an ok game that brought the best moment of the World Cup.

I’m talking Michy Batshuayi  hitting the ball in his own face and it going in the net. Luckily, it wasn’t a goal but oh boy was it a meme.

Remember that boy Adnan Januzaj, well he scored a screamer to make it 1-0 to Belgium and that’s all we can say really. It was a great goal from a player that never reached his full potential at Manchester United.

Don’t worry though, England have to play Belgium again and this time it’s for 3rd place.

Round of sixteen –

England Vs Columbia       score 1 – 1 (England win 4-3 after penalties.)

It was a filthy match from start to finish. Columbia kicked and pulled every England player in sight. They took it one step far in the 54th minute when they gave away a penalty. After years of protest Kane was finally allowed to slot it home for England and make it 1-0.

Pickford made one of the best saves i’ve ever seen to keep England winning. Then Columbia took the corner in the final minute and scored to bring the game into extra time.  After another 30 minutes of ruthless tackles and close chances, it was time for a good old classic penalty shootout. England didn’t have a very good record when it came to shootout’s.

After Henderson missed his penalty. Every England fan thought the worst and got ready to come home. But Pickford made the save and up stepped Eric Dier to send England all the way to the Quarter Finals.

The whole of the country chanted ‘ It’s coming home, it’s coming home’ It was a grand old time, Love Island and England worked together to make it one hell of a summer for England.

Quarter Final –

Sweden vs England  –            score – 0 – 2

Win this game and You bring your country into the semi finals of a World Cup. For nearly 30 years England hadn’t reached the semi finals of a World Cup. One of the players of the tournament Mr. Harry Maguire soared into the sky and made it 1-0 to England.

Sweden had been impressive all tournament and in all honesty England made them look average. Even the great Zlatan wouldn’t have helped. Dele Alli got onto a cross and made it 2-0 and brought his team into the World Cup semi finals.

Semi Final –

Croatia Vs England      score – 2 – 1 (after extra time)

This when the story stops and the reality steps in. The whole of England has to come to terms with many things, England are out, Thresa May is running the country into the ground and Roy Keane shouldn’t be a pundit.

Croatia were awful in the first half and England looked like they would be in the final of the World Cup. What a free kick from one of the best players in the tournament. Tripper sends it flying into the net with a rocket free kick. Pints were thrown into the air and the country was ready for it to come home.

Then, sloppy defending led to a Perisic goal and extra time. Kane looked awful all match and needed to come off much sooner, then the ball fell to Mario Mandzukic and he scored to send Croatia into their first ever World Cup Final.

Conclusion –

complacency was England’s biggest downfall and it was a real shame because England really did have a great chance of getting to the final. However, I feel Southgate is to blame as well, he needed to give some players a rest and maybe start a few wild cards. But, this is all in hindsight, let’s face it with the team England put out you’d expect them to win.

The next step now is the Euros and hopefully the boys can come together again. You’ve made the country proud and Yes you’re coming home not with a trophy, but, with the respect of a whole nation.
